Kettlebells are FREAKIN DANGEROUS

Are you a Barbarian Warlord?  If not, then you should rethink your infomercial inspired workout.

Kettlebells can weigh up to 50 pounds, 80 pounds, or more.  They make them all cute in colors so you forget about the fact that the mafia would use this for something else entirely.  Even a 20 foot boat often only needs a 20 pound (or less) anchor.

Kettlebells are like Killicks…(killick anchor–google it– your new word for the day) .  Hey I don’t wear a helmet to the gym, but maybe I should!

Michele’s 5 WWWWW’s of Kettlebells:

Who:  If you have arthritis or carpal tunnel, hernia or pre-existing neck/shoulder/back issues then Kettlebells are NOT for you.   It’s a hazard to YOU, your core (hernia risk), your rotator cuff/shoulder muscles and the people AROUND you while you’re swinging that thing around like a lightstick at a rave.

What:  Kettlebells are awesome with great instruction.  Kettlebells can be fun and effective with a great trainer who understands the body is a system, who has a great understanding of biomechanics, alignment, corrective exercise.

Why:  We all want hot abs.  People want a solid core, a 6 pack, etc. like on TV..that’s why people are flocking to kettlebells….because of the amazing lean core on those models on TV (( however, know that some of those folks were probably born with those abs, or could have liposculptured, or airbrushed, or…I’m sure the casting director for the infomercial did not require that the abs were a result of kettlebells)).

Where:  Kettlebells are NOT a group activity, especially with the larger weights.  Your form and posture have to be amazing for them to be safe and effective.  Not all instructors can queue a group individually.

When:  When Michele says so..When you are confident you have built a solid core with a regular comprehensive core workout that incorporates dynamic and isometric ab exercises (i.e. plank), then adding weight is something to consider with guidance to ensure good form.   Not just to be a standing daisy or noodle with a 40 pound lasso.

Oh let’s make it worse….With carpal tunnel or arthritis your grip is affected, and now we have everyone swinging 10-80 pound kettlebells around…..be very aware in the gym of who is around you.

What about a kettlebell mat class?   Well….I don’t have nuts, but if I did, and if I was laying on a mat like Cleopatra in a kettlebell class,  I would be very cautious of dropping my own kettlebell on, or grazing, the family jewels.

OH let’s add MUSIC.   Loud Gym Techo Music…wooo hooooo….swinging those giant anchors is even funner to the Dance Party beat.

Have fun, but the goal is to get in shape….remember the goal…

I’m Better than Better than Nothing

What’s the best gift you can give your family?  <answer, MY HEALTH>

Is your health and wellness program better than nothing?

Insurance and “health insurance” should really be called “I’m already sick insurance”….there is really nothing healthy or preventative about it

Do you get any other health or wellness incentive or program?

I know families that have and have had NOTHING yet they’ve had everything…they had no floor/door or roof…they had no car/television/internet…but they were active and hydrated and ate well.  They had health and love and they were amazingly FULL of song and smiles…Your HEALTH is everything.

I’ve been blogging to you for a year now…… it’s a good time to remind you to inventory “what am I doing for my health”.  Really inventory what you’re doing or what you think your employer or Uncle Sam is doing for your health…and let’s face it….

It’s super nice if it’s ANYTHING, because some people get nothing

……but if it is anything, it’s probably only  BETTER THAN NOTHING. 

Is that your backup health plan?   is that your prevention plan?

5 Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Attention to detail!!  You can gain more weight than you think during the holidays if you don’t pay attention.  We can’t eat everything that is advertised to us and we can’t eat at every restaurant that has a nice commercial.

Here are some practical tips that will help you not loathe the New Year.

  1. Journaling is the best way to keep track of what’s going into your pie hole…there are several free online ways to track your food as well.  Write down what you eat so you will know just how many cookies you just ate!
  2. Move!  Keep moving!!  If it’s cold outside use the great indoors!
  3. Drink more water!!  Step away from the soda and festive beverages!!
  4. Sleep well and make sure that relaxing is a task!
  5. Go for a walk with the family…or walk the dog….do something active with your family rather than just watching movies!!

There is always some holiday or another.. we want to remain healthy or get healthier as we age….not the opposite!

What’s the best gift you can give your family for the holidays?

Give your family the best holiday gift ever; YOUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS.  “I have no time” is the number ONE excuse to not take care of ourselves.

You know that I know first hand, that in engineering, as well as entertainment jobs with deadlines, there is some truth to this.

HOWEVER if you can manage the 40 minutes you might have, you can use that time for YOU and that is the BEST GIFT FOR YOUR FAMILY.

How can I help you carve out more time?

  • Your task list; What do you need done?  I know tons of resources in YOUR AREA to help you create more time.  Are you overloaded with mundane tasks like oil changes, home repairs, etc.  If you can create more time you can get more quality time with your family AND create some time for your workout.  From car repairs to garage doors, to heating, to insulation, to windows, to drains, to clothing, to test prep for the children….Also learn more about what can be delivered or managed from your computer.   Have an old 401 to rollover?  Paying more than 4%?  You’d love knowing the resources that are right in your front yard! Automate your life!  I’m a global multitasker…so local is not a problem!!  Just send me an email with what you need…then you have LESS EXCUSES to work on getting HEALTHIER

Pizza and Potlucks; Poor Food Combining

Just follow the money and you will know why this week, the world is feeding our children pizza and claiming it’s a vegetable.

That’s because it’s processed.  Much easier to store a zillion boxes of prison pizza than to slice a tomato.

We all love pizza, don’t get me wrong…but here’s the thing:

  • non organic food has less nutrition
  • frozen food has less nutrition
  • is that real cheese on that pizza, or melamine?  haven’t we all seen cheese that doesn’t melt?
  • you can make  healthier pizza, but that’s not what’s being served up in school

What about food combining?  Why care about food combining?

The root of all the food combining methodologies and charts is that bad food combos get STUCK in your colon.

Pizza, like Potlucks, mess up your digestion.

  • Bread and cheese are a bad food combination
  • the root of all bad food combining is combining Protein and carbs..Carbs meaning processed carbs like bread…and pizza dough is of course bread
  • not to mention all of those choices are acid, not alkaline…but that’s a different seminar

Celiac and Gluten allergies from our poor quality of flour also plague all populations, and that of course, usually includes pizza.

Our POINT of taking about PIZZA and POTLUCKS this week….is just try to PREVENT POOR food combinations so you can POOP!

  4. Do Six Pushups!!  Hey there’s an app for that!!  (seriously there are a few..check it out)
  5. Wash your hands….tis the season to be wheezin
  6. Make your 2012 RESOLUTION list before Thanksgiving….I dare you!!   Dogs and Cats don’t sit around and discuss goals…be smarter than our friends in the animal kingdom!!

Our friends that are off finding a rock to sit on while wearing an aluminum foil hat, waiting for the the sequence of numbers that are following them to appear today, and beam them up to another dimension in time…are sayin that today is the day that we will know our purpose.  Have fun with that!   What is YOUR purpose?

No No No GMO; Why we don’t want to eat Franken-Foods

The word Natural on a label does not mean it’s

A. Natural

B. Good for you

C. Non toxic

D.  Not full of harmful GMO’s and toxic agricultural chemicals/poisons

Did you watch Food, Inc?  that’s the easiest visual way to learn a bit about Genetically Modified Organisms and how they are used in our food supply

“What are GMOs?
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.”

Logically…if you follow the $$$$ you can surmise that the companies that sell the herbicide/weedkiller/insecticide are also the companies that pay for the GMO seeds and “science”.  All regulated by the same people that allow yoga mat plastics into your fast food and rBGH into your dairy products.

The easiest way to make sure you’re not ingesting the untested on humans over time GMO foods, is to buy locally and organically.   That does not mean that everyone at the outdoor farmer’s market is selling local and organic.  They could be selling the same crap…you have to know your vendors.  Finding good food with some nutrition available, in Los Angeles, believe me, is a full time job.  Tracing the corporate mother companies is also a lot of work, since one day a food might be prepared by someone personally and week later a corporate giant may have purchased that little guy..which could of course change how it’s prepared, etc. so it SCALES….bigger and larger means more $$.  I have clients that purchase sessions just to go shopping with me…because I have to take the time to stay on top of this.

If you’ve seen the movie Vanishing of the Bees, you can also see the impact of the new generation of bug killing poison.   When I was a kid it was enough to wash your apple….now..that apple might have been WATERED with the bug and weed killler.   We can’t just wash it off anymore.

On October 16th there was a big march/rally to try to get GMO foods labeled as such.  President Obama once said “Here’s what I’ll do as president… We’ll let folks know whether their food has been genetically modified because Americans should know what they’re buying.” which has not happened yet, but support for this is growing growing growing.

Wash Your Hands or Become a Zombie!

Boo!!

You can get it on your toes…you can get it in your nose!

Staph and MRSA are way scarier than any halloween post I could summon up…so here is a “more artsy than horrifying” hermosa coming at you.

If you’d like to scare the sh*t out of yourself this holiday season…google the staph and MRSA images online…oh the skin lesion images are lovely. I dare you…..you should know what they symptoms look like anyway.

here’s the thing….the bacteria are everywhere.  You have got to wash your hands.

Considering discount fitness at a meat market gym?  Please bring your own antibacterial wipes and be responsible for wiping down equipment BEFORE you touch it.

In the tropics, if we scraped our leg on coral while swimming open water…we would have to scrub it out with a brush and peroxide to prevent staph infection….painful scrubbing.  Almost enough to hide the wound so you wouldn’t have to scrub.  That now seems like nothing to be compared with MRSA.

MRSA, the new and improved drug resistant staph infection, loves heat and moisture combined, like all bacteria do…just like a petri dish!

Sweaty people are hot and wet, but that’s not necessarily a recipe for bringing sexy back….it could be a recipe for dripping contagious MRSA all over that machine you just got on.

I disinfect and clean all my equipment personally before and after every client…however if you are in the discount gyms, I URGE you…Please take responsibility for cleaning your own workspace before (and hey it’s nice if you wipe off after) your workout….

so go ahead and get all OCD cleaning crazy like Miss Peabody on Glee and enjoy your workout

Apple a day season!

Apples…hailed for “keeping the doctor away”…and lately many other great headlines!

Dirty!!  First thing is that apples are on the “dirty dozen list” …you can read the link from this post

so we want to make sure our apples are organic…we don’t get poisoned Snow White mirror mirror on the wall style.

Seasonal:  if you shop local..What does “shop local mean”….that means you shop for foods that are grown locally.  We don’t always want to pay for exotic foods that come from far far away….so apples, now,  should logically be less expensive now because local farms are full of them.  Farmer’s can’t store organic fruits forever…help them help you!

Now what?  you can get all top chef creative or you can just BRING YOUR APPLES TO WORK….so bring in 10 of them on a monday…hey you’re set for higher quality snacking all week
