50 Ways to Lose your Liver

happyliver

Ok maybe I’m 45 reasons short of 50 for a moment, but away we go;

It’s easier than you might think to lose or fail a liver.

I have dear friends and clients, and I’ve LOSS-LOSS-lost friends to losing (or replacing) a liver..it’s not a fun trip for anyone.

I’ve spent the night in the organ transplant ICU at UCLA with a friend that was a patient … that was an experience that will NEVER be forgotten (they are fine now, and they probably don’t remember, but oh wow I sure remember every sight, every sound and every smell).

Fad diets don’t work, and can do invisible yet lasting damage, for a lot of reasons.

We don’t know how far we can push our liver – the point of damage can occur by ingesting something small-it can be like that wafer thin mint in Monty Python’s Meaning of Life – it can be one herb or one over the counter pill, or an asprin,  or even a supplement (which is why I only advocate fresh organic plant foods).

A dear friend in fitness shared this article with me:

Has anyone ever tried to sell you a diet that limits calories?

How about a diet that encourages that you pee/urinate on a PH paper?  Do you know why?

Most diets that want you to pee on the PH stick want you to be in KETOSIS.

Have you ever heard of Ketoacidosis?

Wiki states:

“Ketoacidosis is a metabolic state associated with high concentrations of ketone bodies, formed by the breakdown of fatty acids and the deamination of amino acids. The two common ketones produced in humans are acetoacetic acid and β-hydroxybutyrate.

Ketoacidosis is a pathological metabolic state marked by extreme and uncontrolled ketosis. In ketoacidosis, the body fails to adequately regulate ketone production causing such a severe accumulation of keto acids that the pH of the blood is substantially decreased.

In extreme cases ketoacidosis can be fatal.”

Ketosis is really really bad for our liver and kidneys.  Our liver performs over 500 vital functions!

Ketosis/Ketoacidosis is just one example.  My twitter and inbox are constantly full of people trying to get me to sell their shake or supplement.  First off, they always taste like spackle or like we are serving up blended drywall.

Also Ketosis makes your breath smell like urine.  (yes I said it)

ketosis

Other reasons are well illustrated in the article above, An Open Apology to All of My Weight Loss Clients.

Love your Liver.  It’s the boss of your metabolism too!

P.S.  All of my recipes on this site, and in my books and on my children’s place mat are liver friendly

(it’s never too early or late to start helping YOU).
